D-Day Landing

7 October 2021

Rosalie, bare-footed but undaunted, led the contingent ashore as we disembarked at Denmans Cove on the Tasman Peninsula to commence our Three Capes Walk (actually only two capes).

Landing at Denmans Cove

We had caught an early bus from Kingston Beach, breakfasted in high-brow style at Daci & Daci near Federation Dock, took another bus from Franklin Wharf to Port Arthur and then a high speed landing craft to Denmans Cove as squalls whipped whitehorses across the harbour.

We waded ashore, rebooted and walked into the forest as the last shower failed to dampen our spirits. A clear and well-engineered path sidled the eastern shore of Port Arthur affording views of the infamous convict settlement.

The weather cleared but strong winds hustled us along the short 5 km to Surveyors ‘Hut’ – an almost unimaginably fabulous hostel standing on elevated button-grass moorland with views to Cape Raoul.

Dinner. Bed. More tomorrow.
